One of the things that will make your bridal style unique is the jewellery you wear. A tricky business as it has to compliment the dress without distracting from it -and then there is the consideration of its origins…
When picking things out just remember the three aspects of eco chic (as penned by designer Oliver Heath) nature, technology and vintage.

Vintage choker from ebay

Vintage:
Ask your mum, or mother-in-law, if there is any family jewellery you could borrow for the day. I wore a necklace that had been a gift from A’s Grandad to his wife, and it made the M-I-L’s day to see me wearing it. It was a gorgeous leaf design which complimented the theme of our autumn wedding amazingly.

Follow the style of others and look for vintage bling at markets or on etsy and ebay. Ellen, a rock&roll bride featured on OffbeatBrides found this amazing creation on ebay…

Nature:
This may conjour up image of daisy chains, but also think of jewellery that has been fairly traded or made from natural materials – just check the sources they come from (diamonds are natural stones afterall – and see the trouble they cause!)…
People Tree, the UK’s leading Fairtrade fashion company currently has 20% off their jewellery collection, plus free delivery until the 6th May

Made is a unique brand of fraitrade jewellery and has ranges from designers such as Nicole Farhi, Alexa Chung and Peaches Geldof

The engagement ring is an entirely different story alltogether so we’ll leave that for another time…

holding-handsWhen swept away int he throws of wedding planning it is easy to forget to take time to just be with each other. During engagement A & I set aside whole weekends (we didnt see each other very often) when we would’t talk about the wedding or planning at all – it was great, and necessary to keep sane!

Here are a few ideas:
– Pack a picnic basket and head to the park / riverbank / anywhere… Surprise your partner with their favourite foods from the local farmers market…and a mini bottle of champers – obviously!
– All this week in London there are loads of events taking place to encourage you to slow down (unless you are a marathon runner – go Tegwen!) and take time out. Check out the Slow Down London events planned… 24th April – 4th May
– Save cash – try some of the free things that are on offer in town – Time Out has loads a pretty definative list including comedy clubs, bars, art and music…

wedding magazinesSave money & recycle:
I love wedding magazines and it is so tempting to want to buy them all – so many gorgeous ideas and style tips…plus you get to ogle at the amazing dresses…

But do I really need the most recent issue? Surely the ideas behind the features are timeless – plus, if I am planning an Autumn wedding in Spring I am limited on ideas that are not for basked-in-sunshine weather…

So save money for the actual day by picking up back issues of magazines from friends who got married last year – especially if you have a long engagement – get your soon-to-be-married friends to save their wedding magazines to pass onto you when they are done with them…

If you have a shorter deadline, or dont know any soon-to-be-brides, then you can still pick up back issues on ebay, or put an ad on freecycle (WANTED: wedding magazines). You can still get really recent issues – here’s one on ebay for a March 2009 issue (ends 26th April 7pm) – it will have current news and releases in – but the looks and ideas are timeless! Just remember to tot up the price plus the postage to make sure you are getting it for cheaper than buying new…

There is also an online community dedicated to magazine swapping, so if you have loads of magazines you’d like to swap then hop onto magcycle.com and start swapping!

The story of stuff

The amazing thing about your wedding is that you are marrying the person of your dreams… When planning it can be easy to get carried away with all the excitement and start spending and adding more ‘things’ into the day.

I checked out this video which really brought me down to earth about the way I view stuff:

It has made me think more about what and when i buy, and to aim to be more ethically and environmentally conscious. Thrift, handmade and cutting down are all great ways to be individual and save money too!

Lavender fields of love

Lavender fields of love

So, incase you have stumbled across this site and happen not to be engaged to be married, you may be interested in this eco-speed-dating event happening next Saturday in a lavender field near you…

Following the success of BTCV in York, Carshalton Lavender, the Observer Ethical Award-winning community group based in the London Borough of Sutton, is introducing eco-dating, a new form of match-making for environmentally-conscious singles aged 30-50, to London on Saturday 18th April.

Eco-dating takes the speed dating idea and aims do a little for the environment at the same time – helping to prepare Carshalton Lavender’s field for this year’s annual lavender harvest. Whilst going about the tasks at hand you will be paired with a different partner every 10 minutes, and the small sum of £5 includes all the hot drinks and cake you could need…
